APPRENTICESHIP |
|
In 2008 we are offering apprenticeship positions which can be easily catered to individual interests. We hope to work with people who are flexible, self-motivated, interested in developing their relationship to the world through art and physical labor, and eager to participate in our attempts to live a sustainable lifestyle. Facets of the position can include learning to work with stone, metal, wood, and glass; mechanics; gardening and homesteading projects; gallery improvement and craft fair preparation and attendance.
These positions can be as varied or specific as one wants. There is potential for a cut-and-dry position, 4 hours of labor (anything that needs getting done) per day in exchange for room and board. The rest of the day is free for you to vacation, or join in on our projects if they interest you. Another option includes 4 hours/day of labor, with part or the rest of the day dedicated to personal time with Obie or Katie learning a specific skill (this is where we need your flexibility—the day before a craft fair we won’t have time for teaching sessions, however we will gladly make up for this during other times of the week).
Special projects for 2008 include a grease-car conversion; installing a greywater system to irrigate the vegetable patch; creating an herb garden; starting a small CSA; refurbishing the gallery and creating gardens at its new location; landscaping the quarry with natives and non-invasive beneficials; sustainable forest management including firewood and timber harvesting; planning and building a new studio.
Particulars: 4 hour/day work commitment in exchange for room and board. This does not include general household and meal responsibilities. Housing options include a rustic cabin (no running water but electricity), tent camping, or potentially a 12ft yurt with woodstove. Couples welcome. Sorry, no pets allowed (we do have 2 cats living with us). Vegetarians and vegans are welcome. Minimum stay: one week. Position available from April to October (woodstove is your heat source). Trial period can be arranged; we’d prefer to meet you in person before committing but understand this is not always possible…chatting on the phone beforehand is a must.
A little about us: Obadiah (Obie) is the artist and generalist of the homestead. His passions are mountain biking, sculpture, and building with recycled and natural materials. Katie is the gardener, cook, and herbalist here, spending most of her time in the gardens but also overseeing office and business management.
Area attractions: We have a sauna, mountain bikes, camping gear, a canoe, and sea kayak available for your use. Acadia NP, Schoodic Point, and Tunk Mountain and Lakes region are within an hour from us. Opportunities for outdoor activity abound here in Downeast Maine. |
